Damien Joyce wants to repeat his success with Henry Shefflin

Galway selector Damien Joyce knows all about building winning teams with Henry Shefflin having served alongside him in a pioneering WIT side that won the Fitzgibbon Cup in 1999 and then defended the crown the next year.

Oyce, who has served at various Galway sides since retiring after a distinguished career and was part of Michéal Donoghue’s successful management team, said his main role now is to match new players with veteran players and generate results.

The new management team – Richie O’Neill from Kilkenny and former St Thomas manager Kevin Lally who are also on board – will begin their championship campaign on Saturday when they travel to face Wexford.

Joyce, a former Galway captain who had manned her defenses for nearly a decade, didn’t hesitate to get back in the act when Shefflin called ahead of Christmas.

“I would have first met Henry down in Waterford IT. I played with Henry on the same Fitzgibbon team. I was down there for four years and he was on the team. That would have been my first encounter with Henry.”

Shefflin made his senior debut at Kilkenny while at WIT, with he and Joyce playing a key role in beating UCC in the 1999 Fitzgibbon Cup final.

“He’s had a fantastic career. And then when he came back to Galway I was delighted to get involved up here.” Damien Joyce wants to repeat his success with Henry Shefflin
