Damien O’Reilly leaves RTÉ for a new role in Brussels

RTÉ broadcaster Damien O’Reilly has announced that he is leaving the channel to take up a new role in Brussels.

“Reilly began his radio career on RTÉ Radio 1 presenting Farm News, a segment on Five Seven Live.

He has also worked on other farming shows, Agriview and Farmweek, and in 2009 became the first presenter of Countrywide, where he has been at the helm for the past 13 years.

Listeners will also be familiar with Damien’s voice as he has appeared on shows such as Liveline, The Brendan O’Connor Show, Drivetime and has also been a reporter for the network covering three Olympic Games.

O’Reilly said after 24 “amazing years” at RTÉ he’s decided to take on a new challenge.

“I’m moving to Brussels to start a new job there. It has been an absolute pleasure to work for our national channel since May 1998,” he said.

“I did interviews on farms in the 32 counties. I believe in being able to travel across the country to record stories from farmers and others. I had the best job at RTÉ.

“I enjoyed the challenge of turning these interviews into radio-friendly packages and reports to make them accessible to a wide non-farm audience.

“But I believe now is the perfect time for me to pursue a new professional challenge and I’m excited to be able to do so on a high and fortunate note to leave Countrywide in great shape.”

RTÉ Radio 1 chief Peter Woods said the station regretted losing O’Reilly.

“He first caught my eye as a reporter during the foot-and-mouth crisis. His reporting, use of tape, packaging and analysis were top notch,” he said.

“He has an innate understanding of radio as a form. A past winner of Speech Broadcaster of the Year, multiple Agricultural Journalist awards and – at this year’s IMRO Awards – Magazine Program of the Year for Countrywide, Damien exits the broadcaster at the top of his game.

“We wish him the best in his future endeavors and have no doubt that the high standards, motivation and work ethic he has observed at the radio center will stand him in good stead. Damien will be missed.”

Damien will air his final show on Countrywide on Saturday November 5th.

RTÉ will announce the new presenter of RTÉ Radio 1 Countrywide in the coming days.
