Dan Evans whizzes past Kyle Edmund in an all-British clash in Washington

Dan Evans secured his third-round spot at the Citi Open with a straight-set win over compatriot Kyle Edmund.

The 32-year-old 16th seed made short work of being without an opponent who had worked his way back from a lengthy injury layoff to win 6-1, 6-2 in Washington in just over an hour.

He will now face either American Taylor Fritz or Australia’s Alexei Popyrin in the next round, while Edmund is contemplating a return to singles after a 20-month hiatus after three knee surgeries.

Evans then said in court: “My concentration was very good. I had a little slip at the end but I figured I didn’t do much wrong. He hit three winners, I think.

“I’m really glad I’m still at it. It’s always nice to start a new swing with a win and it’s nice to reach the third round.”

Evans needed just 22 minutes to win the first set for the loss of a single game as he capitalized on a series of errors from a rusty Edmund.

He broke to 15 in the opening game and repeated the feat in the fifth and seventh, unforced errors costing the former Britain number one dearly.

Edmund, 27, held serve with an ace to level the second set 1-1, but again mistakes proved costly as Evans took a nearly flawless performance to take a 4-1 lead.

He broke again to serve for the match when Edmund’s first serve failed him, but was immediately plowed back after his opponent produced a fine forehand return and then an exquisite drop shot to earn his chance.

The respite proved temporary, however, as Evans grabbed the win at 62 minutes on the second try. Dan Evans whizzes past Kyle Edmund in an all-British clash in Washington
