The star made headlines with jokes about the Prime Minister, sex acts with men and heartbreak after he left Downton Abbey.
Here’s a look back at some of Dan Stevens’ most sneaky moments that didn’t involve him starring in a scripted TV series…
Dan has entered the world of politics – but only on the small screen – with a pivotal role in the Starz Gaslit series; a television series starring Julia Roberts and Seann Penn about the Watergate scandal that toppled US President Richard Nixon.
In his role, Dan plays an attorney named John Dean, who served as an adviser to the White House and was implicated in the scandal that led the Nixon administration to break into the offices of the Democratic National Committee first. President’s re-election campaign at the time to steal money and bug the offices and then try to cover up the crime.
Discussing the show on BBC One’s talk show The One Show ahead of its release, Dan drew attention to the obvious similarities between embarrassing President Nixon and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson – who was was found to have broken the law the same week that Dan appeared on The One Show and was fined by the police for ‘Partygate’.
Describing Gaslit, Dan said: “Well, what you’re getting yourself into is a crime for a leader who is caught up in a messy war, embroiled in a stupid scandal, and under siege. by ambitious idiots, and should really resign.”
After a pause, he quips: “No, I’m sorry that was the Boris Johnson intro. I just said the introduction to Boris Johnson, I’m so sorry. ”

By starring in Gaslit, Dan was indirectly embroiled in a Hollywood controversy because he was not the original actor to play John Dean in the political drama.
The role was originally given to Call Me By Your Name star Armie Hammer – whose career fell in 2012 due to allegations of sexual abuse and cannibalism.
An ex-girlfriend named Courtney Vucekovich made startling allegations that Armie had texted her to ask him to grill and eat one of her ribs.
Armie’s career came to an abrupt end as he faced accusations and legal battles to come up with his version of events – and left many projects unfinished.
TV Line announced that Dan would be replacing Armie as Gaslit last April, reporting: “Stevens takes on the role of John Dean that Hammer vacated, the young White House Counsel is torn between ambition and his struggle with whether he can lie or not. to protect the President. ”
‘Beat American Men’
Gaslit is of course not the first popular US project in which Dan will star – and back in 2014, he landed the lead role in the horror TV series The Guest.
He plays an American soldier – and Dan was in the headlines when he appeared on Good Morning Britain to promote the film.
Celebrity host Susanna Reid asked him, “You play this obvious all-American hero and this is your big opportunity in Hollywood. You have to beat a lot of American men to get this part. ”
As Dan and the cast burst into laughter, Susanna asked, “Why does that make you giggle? Aren’t you going to kill them? ”
After starring in The Guest, Dan went on to star in other Hollywood films including Beauty and the Beat, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, Apostle, and Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga.
Ghost of Downton
To many, Dan is still best remembered – and missed – for his role as Matthew Crawley on the ITV whimsical drama Downton Abbey.
He played the character for the first three seasons of the show from 2010 to 2012 – but left fans of the series heartbroken when Matthew was killed in a car accident.
The actor said he’s been forced to apologize to fans in the years since the heartbreaking scenes first aired – explaining in a 2017 interview: “I’m still apologizing now. everyone.
“The path that Matthew took was out of my hands – but it was quite shocking. There are some people who are very upset and I have had to apologize to a lot of people over the past four years.
“I’ve accomplished a lot since then, though – so hopefully people are seeing what I’ve done and starting to understand why I want to continue.”
Marvel fans were thrilled to see Dan in 2017’s mind-bending X-Men spin-off Legion play the lovable and traumatized character David Haller – a young man who must enter mental institution after being diagnosed as schizophrenic only to discover that his voice was. claim that he can hear in his head is real because he has psychic abilities and is one of the most powerful mutants in the universe.
Fans were torn apart over the course of three seasons of the critically acclaimed series as viewers watched protagonist David transform from a lovable hero into a terrifying villain, rapist. his own girlfriend and murdered and tortured some of his past friends and colleagues.
Defend the controversial plot, Dan says in 2021: “The lovely thing about that is that it is quite a lot [show creator Noah Hawley] all estimated. I know people want shows to last like 27 years, but that’s just not possible.
“Generally not good. It’s not interesting. And actually, if someone has a third season, which is a story, it’s the beginning, the middle, and the ending. You’re not in some endless open-ended thing.
“It was the ending I described. We’re going from the cradle across the cosmic plane back to the cradle, and yeah, I really like the shape of it. “
