The One Show: Dan Stevens attacks Boris Johnson

Downton Abbey star Dan Stevens appeared worlds apart from Matthew Crawley as he attended the premiere of his new series Gaslit in New York City on Monday.

The 39-year-old actor stood out from the crowd with his mustache and quirky sense of style, which was a far cry from the period dress he wears in the hit ITV drama.

Dan joins Julia Roberts, 54, and Sean Penn, 61, in the cast of the Starz original series — with the political thriller opening Sunday (April 24).

The actor rocked a colorful and coordinated outfit that brought a vintage style to the event by donning a multicolored purple trench coat and matching shirt and trousers.

The dramatic attire was accompanied by a pair of striped mustard and red boots, with Dan sporting a slicked-back hairstyle and tinted glasses for the red carpet.

The actor is best known for playing Matthew Crawley in the historical drama Downton Abbey from 2010 to 2012. He was nominated for numerous awards for this role.

His new project, Gaslit, is yet another historical television series, described as a “modern interpretation of the Watergate scandal” that took place between 1972 and 1974.

The focus was on the administration of US President Richard Nixon, who was suspected of being involved in a break-in at the headquarters of the rival Democratic National Committee.

The scandal led to Nixon’s resignation, although the upcoming series is set to focus on forgotten people of the time and untold stories about those involved.

Gaslit will primarily focus on socialite Martha Mitchell, played by Roberts, the wife of Nixon’s trusty Attorney General John N. Mitchell, played by Penn.

Mitchell has been labeled a “Watergate whistleblower”, although efforts are known to have been made to discredit her at the time of the scandal in the 1970s.

A synopsis states: “When the Watergate burglary happens, Martha’s story takes a turn and the decisions she makes afterward will put her reputation on the line.”

Stevens plays attorney John Dean, who was involved in the scandal, while Betty Gilpin, 35, plays his wife Mo Dean in the new project, which will be released later this week.

Other cast members include Shea Whigham, Darby Camp and Aleksandar Filimonović. It’s unclear if anyone will play Nixon in the upcoming TV series about the scandal.
