Dan Walker admits the ‘plain truth’ behind the BBC’s exit is ‘much more boring’ than reports

Dan Walker has dismissed press reports of his departure from the BBC, citing unnamed “sources” and “moles”.

The TV star, who has hosted BBC Breakfast since 2016, announced last week that he was moving to 5 News on Channel 5, replacing Sian Williams.

He is the latest high-profile departure from the BBC following the loss of Newsnight presenter Emily Maitlis, former North American editor Jon Sopel and veteran political interviewer Andrew Marr.

Reflecting on his decision, Walker shared a photo of a scenic sunset with his Twitter followers.

He wrote: “It is often the case that the simple truth is much more boring than all the made-up ‘moles’ and so-called ‘sources’ claim.

“In short … a man with a really good job that he loved was offered a really good job somewhere else that offered an amazing new challenge and a chance to do exciting television.

“The guy explained to his current employers that although it was a difficult decision, he had decided to leave. They are now trying their best to give him a dignified exit.

“Happy Monday. I’m going for a toast.”

Walker, 45, hosted Football Focus from 2009 to 2021 and has been a fixture on the company’s flagship breakfast show since 2016.

He previously fronted BBC Breakfast with Louise Minchin, who departed in September 2021.

The 2020/2021 annual report for the BBC listed Walker’s salary as between £295,000 and £299,999, with program commitments listed as Football Focus, which he has since left, as well as BBC breakfast programmes.

Details of his new salary were not disclosed.

Walker’s new assignment sees him presenting the recently relaunched flagship news bulletin 5 News and “hosting a number of new programs on the channel,” Channel 5 said.
