Dan Walker has announced his last day on the BBC will be May 17th.
The presenter has been a fixture on BBC Breakfast since 2016 and previously hosted the company’s flagship breakfast show with Louise Minchin, who left in September 2021.
The 45-year-old announced last month that he was moving to Channel 5, where he will replace Sian Williams as the main presenter at 5 News.
Speaking to co-host Sally Nugent, who took over Minchin, Walker confirmed his last day of airing for the breakfast program.
“May 17 is my last day, so two weeks today,” he said, adding, “If you pull that (shift) off because we’re on it’s just six, six more three and then I’m get out.”
When asked by Nugent if it was “somewhat nice” to know he’d be getting more sleep, Walker said it was nice, but the decision to leave was also “big” and “sad.”
“It’s nice, but as I explained to you before, it’s also quite… it was a big decision and it’s also a pretty sad one.
“The other thing I want to say is thank you to everyone who has sent so many lovely messages and one thing has come to my mind because a lot of people want to chat with you about this program isn’t it because it means a lot to a lot of people it reminded me how special this show is and how much everyone who sees it loves it so thank you everyone for coming and saying some nice things.
Walker also previously presented Football Focus from 2009 to 2021.

Channel 5 said his new assignment will see him presenting the recently relaunched flagship news bulletin 5 News and “hosting a range of new programs on the channel”.
Walker took part in the 2021 series of Strictly Come Dancing and revealed he signed on for the show to do some “fun” and have a “giggle” after reporting difficult news during the pandemic.
In response to a BBC breakfast tweet with a clip of him talking about his last day, he wrote: “I’m going to miss everything and everyone… except the 3am alarm clock.”
