Dan Walker discusses leaving BBC on Jeremy Vine

Dan Walker has said that his appearance last year on Strictly Come Dancing has made him a better TV presenter.

The 45-year-old also hinted that taking part in the BBC dance program has spurred him on to new opportunities in his career.

Earlier this week, Dan made the shocking announcement that he was leaving BBC Breakfast after 13 years to join Channel 5.

He talked about leaving the morning show with radio host Jeremy Vine, who has also appeared on Serious.

“I don’t know about you, Jeremy, but I feel like it was a great experience for me,” he shared.

“You not only get to dance but you learn a lot about you, you get to know yourself well and you have a great friendship with your professional partner, in my case Nadia.

“I think that has made me a better presenter, so I look forward to putting some of those skills to good use at Channel 5.”

Dan and his dance partner Nadia Bychkova reached the quarterfinals of the serious competition from the disco in 2021, finishing in fifth place.

He surprised even himself by making it past eight weeks of the show – despite public backlash that suggested the BBC presenter was kept as a “fix”.

As he bowed before the semi-final, Dan admitted that he was “relieved” to finally be warmed up because his body was “giving up on him”.

Speaking at the time, he said: “I know there are some angry weekly that we try to stay, but the overwhelming love and lovely comments outweigh all that.

“I think the right people make it to the semi-finals, the four best dancers in the competition. My days are over, there’s no way I can compete.”

Deaf EastEnders star Rose Ayling-Ellis and partner Giovanni Pernice were ultimately crowned the winners.

Dan is leaving BBC Breakfast for Channel 5 in ‘a few weeks’ time

Dan revealed he’ll be joining Channel 5 “in the next few weeks” but has so far been tight-lipped about what kind of show he’ll be presenting.

Though he did say it wouldn’t be just a breakfast gig, which he was excited about.

In a Twitter video announcing his big news, he said: “This is also a big decision for me because I love BBC Breakfast, I love working with Sally [Nugent] and I love the team there.

“But Channel 5 comes with big ambitions, big plans, and I don’t think opportunities like this come up often and I can’t wait.”

He added: “What I like about this deal is that I not only get to present the news, but also host a bunch of shows right on the channel.”
