Jayne Torvill has discovered she’s not the only great sports player in her family – one of her ancestors was the captain of West Ham United.
The 64-year-old figure skating legend and teammate Christopher Dean, 63, look back on their family history in a TV show.
And Jayne found with his mother a relative named Charlie Bicknell, who as captain led the Hammers to their first major trophy, the War Cup – the equivalent of the FA Cup – in 1940.
She said: “I am completely shocked but I love that my cousin is the captain of
“Over the years, a lot of people have said, ‘Does anyone in your family play sports,’ and I said no, but apparently they did. My dad would be surprised and proud to hear we have a football legend in the family. ”
Jayne also found Charlie’s cousin, Ernie Bicknell, a successful boxer in 1928.
She is related to him through her great, great grandparents.
Jayne and Christopher share an emotional journey to uncover their family history through DNA.
Christopher, who grew up in a small family with his father and stepmother, discovers he has many relatives on the other side of the world.
His great, great, great uncle, Jerimiah Stokes, moved abroad in 1859.
Christopher, who even met his cousin David from Utah, said: “I was blown away by this story, I would dream about it. I don’t have any relatives and now I have relatives. OH. It’s only me. ”
Jayne added: “You think this is going to change your life because you have loved ones you didn’t know you had.”
