Dancing with The Stars judges rated my looks more than my performance, says Nicolas Roche

France-born Nicolas said he was also surprised when MC Jennifer Zamparelli also commented on how attractive she looked when she found his good looks, telling him on last Sunday’s show: “I am really enjoy watching you dance on the floor.”

Nicolas told the Irish Sun: “I was surprised. . . I don’t expect any comments on my appearance. . . But it did make me smile.

“You see a lot of dancers with their poses and everything. They all look really nice so I was expecting a comment on the pedicure.

“I’d rather take that, than a comment on my appearance.”

Judge Arthur confessed to Ryan Tubridy on RTE Radio: “Don’t tell my husband (Brian Dowling) but I have a little crush on him (Nicolas).

“He’s like an eye candy but he’s got a lot of work to do.”

The 37-year-old finished for the last time Sunday night jiveting with former DWTS champion Karen Byrne.

Judge Brian Redmond was harsh: “When you ride alone, you can pedal at your own pace, when you pedal in pairs, if you’re out of sync, you’ll get nowhere.

“Technically, you have a lot of work to do to try to improve that dancing.”

Branding him as ‘dove pedicure’, Brian gives him three small points with Nicolas’ finish on point 11, the worst point of the night.

The athlete admitted that he was stunned by the high rating of the judges on his first jump.

He told us: “They were a little harsh considering it was the first day. It’s a very complicated choreography. ”

Nicolas, son of 1987 Tour de France winner and Giro d’Italia winner Stephen Roche, also denied that taking a ten-day break to return home to Monaco for the New Year had played a part in the success. his poor record.

He said “I went to Ireland at the beginning of December and had two weeks before Merry Christmas and only came back for Christmas and New Year and came back here on 2 January so in fact I only have ten days left.

“So unfortunately timing isn’t my excuse. It’s a harder dance.

“When you come from a completely different environment – for me, smiling is not the easiest thing to do and when I started to get precise with my feet in the studio, it was really difficult. I couldn’t put on a smile.

“So when I’m on the dance floor, I’m more focused on smiling and trying to perform and the footwork frustrates me.”

Although he lives in Monaco, he insists that he is “100% committed to the show”.

He added: “I returned to Ireland with two massive suitcases. My grandma thinks I’ve moved in, and I’ll move in while the show is on. I’m ready to stay here.

“With Covid and everything, I miss home like I am on the road. It’s been great to be with my family and on the show, so I’m committed to the show and being here.

“I will limit all travel because today with Omicron you have a lot of risk going out the front door so it’s very difficult to stay on the show with my dancing skills, I don’t want to be disqualified because of Covid.

“So I will limit my travel and stay here in Ireland.”

That meant breaking up with his new girlfriend, Sophia Cortez, who remained at home in Monaco but traveled to Dublin to be in a limited audience at DWTS to cheer him on.

Nicolas, who split from wife Deborah Robles in 2015, said of Sophia’s new love affair: “We’ve been dating for about six or seven months now. She’s tough on me and this is part of the game, she wants me to be good.

“I am sacrificing a lot because she is still back on the continent. I’m here for at least a few weeks so I wanted to make the trip worthwhile.

“Even though I thought I had completely let go and relaxed beyond my expectations, she (Sophia) said I still looked stressed out.”

Despite labeling him ‘eye candy’, judge Arthur also defended Nicolas from the other judges’ harsh comments, saying: “Don’t forget this man who’s been cycling his whole life made him somewhat restrained, now he’s loosening up, credit him”.
