Daniel Kaluuya makes his screenwriting debut with a dystopian thriller for Netflix

Daniel Kaluuya will co-write his first feature-length film starring Top Boy star Kane Robinson.

The uturistic dystopian drama The Kitchen is also co-produced by the Oscar-winning actor, who previously wrote short films and wrote two episodes of Skins, in which he played Posh Kenneth.

The Get Out star, who will produce under his 59% Productions banner, will co-write the Netflix film with Gangs Of London’s Joe Murtagh, while first-time feature filmmaker Kibwe Tavares will serve as director.

He will produce for DMC Film with Daniel Emmerson, while actor Michael Fassbender will serve as executive producer.

The Kitchen is set in London in the year 2044, in a future where the gap between rich and poor has been stretched to its limits, all forms of public housing have been abolished and London’s working class have been forced to live in makeshift housing on the outskirts of the city .

The Kitchen is London’s last village, home to residents who refuse to move from their homes, and is the home of Izi, played by Robinson, who is desperately trying to find a way out, and 12-year-old Benji, played by one New arrival Jedaiah Bannerman who lost his mother and is looking for a family.

The film follows the unlikely couple as they struggle to survive in a system set against them.

Kaluuya said: “In 2011 I was in my hair salon and there was a guy bragging about Smash and Grabs – kids who commit million-pound heists in a minute and get £200 for it.

“I saw the potential to open a unique story door on inequality, fatherhood, class, joy, resilience, courage, defiance and caring from London.

“Now, almost a decade later, Kibwe Tavares, Daniel Emmerson and I begin production, delving into a dystopian London that questions what ‘caring’ means at home and as a society, and the dangers of our future if we remain indifferent to everything around us.

“I am blessed and honored to have my first co-written film with this inspiring group of creatives and with the support of Film 4 and Netflix.

“We all look forward to seeing Kibwe’s incredible, cinematic, electric vision come to life and create a moment that audiences will want to take with them.”

Director Tavares, who served as executive producer on BBC drama Noughts & Crosses, received a Sundance Special Jury Award for his animated short Robots Of Brixton and a Sundance Short Film Grand Jury Prize nomination for Jonah starring Kaluuya.

He said: “The Kitchen is very much a love letter to London, the city that shaped my childhood and ultimately my identity.

“It’s set in an extreme version of our contemporary world; Our characters have no choice but to let the city take over.

“Through Benji, a 12-year-old care recipient, we explore what we lose as a society in the ever-changing and changing life patterns of our cities. This is a film for all the communities out there trying to look out for each other.”

Filmed on location in London and Paris, The Kitchen will be released worldwide on Netflix in 2023.

Fiona Lamptey, Director of UK Features at Netflix, said: “I’ve had the pleasure of producing for Kibwe over the years and couldn’t be happier to now be supporting Kibwe’s debut film as part of the Netflix UK film roster.

“Ambitious, contemporary, The Kitchen will showcase the grand vision he has as a filmmaker by bringing the exciting world-building and textured nuances of Daniel Kaluuya’s debut screenplay to our screens.”
