On Tuesday, Roku Original released the first trailer for the film about the satirical musician whose career spans more than 45 years.
The Harry Potter star plays the title character, who has had parody hits like Eat It, Fat, Smells Like Nirvana and White & Nerdy, in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, slated for release later this year. .
Weird Al is said to have co-wrote the script with Eric Appel, who served as director and executive producer on the biopic.
In 2010, Appel directed the biographical comedy of the same name, which featured Breaking Bad star Aaron Oaul as Weird Al Yankovic, with the Funny Or Die production company releasing a fake trailer.
Bizarre: Al Yankovic’s Story details the extraordinary life and career of the comedic musician, who has won five Grammy Awards, six platinum and a Billboard 200 number one album – Mandatory Fun.
At the beginning of the trailer, Radcliffe speaks into the microphone saying “hopefully you’re ready for this” before playing one of Yankovic’s trademark accordions.
In the next few scenes, Radcliffe transforms into a satirical musician, including wearing a series of colorful Hawaiian shirts, next, he is seen walking on stage, topless, and spitting whiskey while the hit ‘Like A Surgeon’ – a parody of Madonna’s hit ‘Like A Virgin’ – plays in the background.
After asking the radio host, Dr. Demento and two other men “does anyone have an accordion?” With three armed hands, Radcliffe ends the minute-long trailer by letting Madonna – played by Evan Rachel Wood – enter a mansion and quip “what can I say? I’m full of surprises ” before struggling to close the front door.
Yankovic credits Dr. Demento for giving him the initial exposure with which he built his career on his Southern California-based radio show. Dr Demento is played by The Office star Rainn Wilson, while Toby Huss and Julianne Nicholson play parents Nick and Mary Yankovic, respectively.
