Daniel Williams breaks into the MMA strawweight rankings

The ONE Championship strawweight mixed martial arts (MMA) rankings have recently been shaken and a new face has entered the top five in the division.

Daniel Williams has found himself ranked 5th among the elite names in the ever-changing 125lb weight class after going on a three-fight win streak over the past few months.

The ONE Super Series competitor beat former strawweight king Dejdamrong Sor Amnuasirichoke last February, defeated Japan’s Namiki Kawahara via unanimous decision in April, and then defeated Chinese contestant Zhaxi Zelang in stunning fashion on July 22nd.

Wiliams and Zelang weren’t afraid to throw Heumacher as soon as the opening bell rang, but it was “Mini-T” who clinched the win after catching the Chinese striker with a meteoric right hand that sent him tripping before he crashed to the ground mat in the first round.

It’s also worth noting that “Mini-T” also ranks No. 5 in the Muay Thai strawweight division and even called out the reigning Muay Thai strawweight champion, Joseph Lasiri, after his victory over Zelang.

As with all martial arts, rankings are always changing, but ONE’s strawweight division has seen a lot of changes over the past few months.

Currently the breakdown looks like this:

  • Strawweight Champion Joshua Pacio
  • #1: Jarred Brooks
  • No. 2: Bokang Mansunyane
  • No. 3: Hiroba Minowa
  • No. 4: Gustavo Balart
  • No. 5: Daniel Williams

Williams’ entry into the top 5 saw Cuba’s Gustavo Balart move up to 4th after earning back-to-back wins via unanimous decision against division stars Ryuto Sawada and former defending champion Yosuke Saruta after ending his run under the Banner’s ascent had started with a record of 0-3.

Balart’s entry into the rankings came at the expense of Filipino Jeremy Miado, who initially secured a spot in the standings when he defeated compatriot Lito Adiwang at ONE X last March.

While Williams’ rise to the elite of both classes comes as no surprise, thanks to his ability to stand and bat with the best of them, his primary focus is to fight for the strawweight Muay Thai belt first.

Who he fights next will be a massive indicator of which of the two sports he will be prioritizing in the coming months.
