EastEnders alumnus Danniella Westbrook was asked about previous drug problems by Nigel Farage on his GB News show, and she told him that exposing them ‘saved’ her
Danniella Westbrook has said she would probably die if her drug problem hadn’t been exposed.
The actress, 48, was asked about her experience with drug use while being interviewed by former politician Nigel Farage, 58, on GB News’ Talking Pints show.
She recalls “having problems” before finding fame playing Sam Mitchell on EastEnders in the 1990s, but said: “Really the media saved me if anything, more than once.”
“By putting me above all the papers, by showing me in a sense, […] I had to do something with my life, or else I would have died,” she explained in the interview.
Danniella says she used to have drug problems before she came to public attention, but admits those problems became “high” when she joined the BBC soap opera in 1990.
She added: “I don’t have that much money [pre-fame] like I did when I was on a big show. “
In a recent interview with Farage, the actor was asked what makes a person “turn around” when they have developed such problems with excessive drug use.
She responds by saying that the individual needs to want change in their life, rather than being motivated by family or friends. “Only I can turn this around,” she said.
Danniella said her family “couldn’t get it,” she recalls saying it put her mother under severe stress, worried about the possibility that her daughter would die.
When asked how she could turn things around, she said she was brought into a meeting and “where [she] need to be,” she said, adding that she was ready to change her life.
She recalls: “I thought I had just finished work, was sick and tired, sick and tired at the same time.” The actor argues that recovery should be driven by individuals, not loved ones.
