DANNY Dyer broke his silence on his EastEnders exit telling fans it would be “f***ing special”.
44 years old actor also confirmed that his much-loved character Mick Cart will not be killed for leaving the door open for a return in the future.
Speaking to his daughter Dani on their Sorted with the Dyers podcast, he said: “I’m leaving EastEnders. I’m so lucky, I’m grateful. When you’re in a job like soap, your contract is you get an extension and each time they ask me to stay and i’m so grateful for that because i’ve seen so many people come and go it’s been very difficult.
“I was always debating whether or not I wanted to re-sign and I pondered for a while about whether it was time to roll the dice, take the leap.”
Danny denies he has been snapped up by a rival channel in a bumper £1m deal.
He continued: “I have not been poached by anyone, which is not true at all.
“The big news is that I have decided not to renew my contract. That’s all. It’s not because I’ve fallen out of love with anyone, I love everyone. It’s been amazing to me. It’s a great job. important part of television.
“I’m grateful for the good years I’ve had there. I’ll miss everyone massively. That’s me taking the risk.”
EastEnders fans were left devastated by the shock escape, taking to social media to express their grief.
Speaking to viewers, who both loved and hated him, he said: “I know some people will be jumping for joy when I leave EastEnders, others will be quite disappointed. Others will wish me good luck. me the best future.
“There’s really no big story around it. Apart from the fact that I decided to go try some other things.
“I’m 44 now, and I’ve had nine years playing Mick and I think he needs a break. I’m still looking for that defining role. Maybe it’s there, maybe not. But I am.” I’ve always been quite ambitious and I had a pretty long career before joining EastEnders.
“I know the landscape has changed a bit but I want to go out there and have another trip, and the only way I can do that is if I decide to quit my job.”
Danny has played pub owner Mick for 9 years and has been part of several major storylines including his battle with alcoholism that almost cost Mick his life, the breakdown of his marriage to his wife. Linda and a harrowing childhood abuse story.
Danny said: “I just wanted to put a little version of myself out there. “It’s true. I really have a weird feeling when I think I’m leaving a job that has become such an important part of my life.
“But it has to be done, and it’s definitely the right time.
“Let me tell you something – Mick’s exit is going to be a very, very powerful thing. I’d love for the door to be left open, and as far as I know.
“Then who knows. When I go out there and fail miserably, I can come back with my tail between my legs and go, ‘Will you take me back?’
“But I just wanted to send some love to everyone at EastEnders. I love you all so much.
“It’s going to be a sad year for me, but I’m also very excited about it. So we’re going to attack this year, and we’re going to make this a special year.”
