Danny denies he has been snapped up by a rival channel in a bumper £1m deal.

He continued: “I have not been poached by anyone, which is not true at all.

“There’s really no big story around it. Apart from the fact that I decided to go try some other things.

“I’m 44 now, and I’ve had nine years playing Mick and I think he needs a break. I’m still looking for that defining role. Maybe it’s there, maybe not. But I am.” I’ve always been quite ambitious and I had a pretty long career before joining EastEnders.

“I know the landscape has changed a bit but I want to go out there and have another trip, and the only way I can do that is if I decide to quit my job.”

Danny has played pub owner Mick for 9 years and has been part of several major storylines including his battle with alcoholism that almost cost Mick his life, the breakdown of his marriage to his wife. Linda and a harrowing childhood abuse story.

Danny said: “I just wanted to put a little version of myself out there. “It’s true. I really have a weird feeling when I think I’m leaving a job that has become such an important part of my life.
“But it has to be done, and it’s definitely the right time.

“Let me tell you something – Mick’s exit is going to be a very, very powerful thing. I’d love for the door to be left open, and as far as I know.

“Then who knows. When I go out there and fail miserably, I can come back with my tail between my legs and go, ‘Will you take me back?’

“But I just wanted to send some love to everyone at EastEnders. I love you all so much.

“It’s going to be a sad year for me, but I’m also very excited about it. So we’re going to attack this year, and we’re going to make this a special year.”
