The trends for fall are all incredibly cheerful. From brightly colored floral bedspreads to rainbow motifs on welcome mats, it seems like we’re trying to isolate ourselves from the oncoming darkness of winter by cheerfully decorating. It makes sense. Our home should be our happy place. Crossing the threshold should be a relief.
Color can make a big difference, but it doesn’t have to be obvious. Instead of settling on a base color on your walls, try a lighter or pastel shade for a more grown-up look. I like a grey-lilac, a pale pistachio green or even a strong coral that is strong without being harsh.
Tile is another great way to brighten up a home. Replace a backsplash with a bright, glossy one-piece suit, or try modernist patterned tiles. Mutina at tilestyle.ie have some amazingly sharp designs, and Nathalie du Pasquier’s designs for the brand are particularly cool and beautiful.
If the budget allows, you can be very sophisticated and incorporate Missoni’s famous patterns into your furniture or curtains. I love the Missoni Home fabrics for the 50th anniversary edition of Hans Hopfer’s mah-jong sofas for Roche Bobois.
If your budget is smaller, you can get some very affordable but large colored glass vases that will add a pop of color to a room. Also a brightly framed mirror – I’m currently coveting the pink rippled mirror from Penneys/Primark, which is similar to the Instagram-famous Ettore Sottsass for Poltronova Ultrafragola mirror, but at a fraction of the cost.
Don’t underestimate the power of touch. If you can’t afford good fabric on your couch, make sure you have a quality throw or blanket that will add a sense of comfort and luxury. Likewise, rugs provide a cozy feeling underfoot and at the same time are a very safe way to bring a lot of color into a room. You may have seen the spectacularly bright, bold rugs designed by Joanne Hynes for Dunnes. The Equine Dream woven blanket, €80, is my favorite.
Murano glass is a beautiful way to add a bright and cheerful touch to your home, whether it’s a chandelier or a set of drinking glasses (I recently found a beautiful set of four at TK Maxx). La DoubleJ and Sir/Madam have beautiful glasses that will delight guests.
It’s not just about trends: personalize your home with items that bring back good memories. Showing what makes joy will have you smiling through the cold, dark nights.
