David Beckham said he doesn’t hire a private driver because driving is one of the few times he can forget who he is.
The soccer star, 47, said he only uses his driver when going out to dinner and can enjoy “a glass of wine”.
Talk to the British GQhe details his early driving experiences and the lessons he taught his children about cars.
When asked if he could ever forget that he was David Beckham, he said: “It’s fun when I’m driving. That’s one of the reasons I love driving.
“Everybody’s like, ‘Why don’t you get a driver?’ I love driving.
“I never like being driven, unless I’m out to dinner and I can have a glass of wine. But that’s different.”
Beckham also reflected on teaching his four children how to drive, saying: “One of my sons hasn’t passed his test and I was with him in the car the day before and I told him ‘listen to him’.
“We were in my old Land Rover. He said, ‘Dad, how do you know when you need to shift gears?’ I say, ‘just listen and you will know’.
“That’s what I love. And I love driving my old Defenders because that interaction, you’re running an apparatus.”
The sportsman, who has partnered with Maserati, said he wants to control his children’s use of social media.

“I don’t spend a lot of time on that,” he said.
“I’m not sitting there all day looking at Instagram or scrolling. Because I’m also trying to control my kids and their use of social media.
“It’s an important part of being a father today.”
