David Hockney is set to launch an immersive experience that will give visitors the opportunity to interact with audio and visual elements to follow a journey through his art.
his performance, created by the 85-year-old Bradford-born artist, will premiere early next year at Lightroom, a new four-story venue in King’s Cross, London.

Hockney will reveal his artistic process using a cycle of six themed chapters, with music specially composed by American composer Nico Muhly and commentary by Hockney himself.
Through the use of virtual reality, visitors will watch Hockney experiment with perspective, use photography as a way of “drawing with the camera”, capturing the passage of time in his Polaroid collage and the joy of spring with iPad.
Speaking on the soundtrack that concert visitors will hear, Hockney said: “The world is very, very beautiful if you look at it, but most people don’t look at it very much.
“They sweep the ground in front of them so they can walk, they don’t really see things too clearly, with high intensity. I do.”
Program director Mark Grimmer, of design studio 59 Productions, said: “We worked with David to put together the large-scale projected visuals, animations, archival interviews and book sets. own as well as commissioned scores to create a new kind of show that brings a lot of value to Hockney’s stage design as well as his painting, drawing and photography.
“It has been exciting to work with David over the past three years and we hope the show introduces a whole new audience to his art.”
After three years of collaborating on the project, Hockney and the creators of Lightroom will launch the program, which is scheduled to be the first in the category of original programs, on January 25.
