David Hockney works to sell in dedicated auction

An auction dedicated to works by David Hockney will be sold to “celebrate the achievements” of the influential British artist.

A series of paintings, photographs and sketches by the 85-year-old Bradford-born artist will debut under the hammer at Phillips in Berkeley Square, central London, on September 13.

The auction bearing its name will feature highlights from South African collectors Andrew and Sandy Ovenstone, who own a Cape Dutch farm called Stellenberg Gardens.

These include the 1984 Tyler Dining Room painting, the Celia In A Wicker Chair from 1974, and arguably Hockney’s most sought-after 1979 edition, Afternoon Swim, which highlights the artist’s skill with engineering lithography.

The auction will also include Hockney’s 2010 untitled painting, 2011’s The Arrival Of Spring In Woldgate and his 1980 Celia Look sketch.

Robert Kennan, head of European publications for Phillips, said: “This sale celebrates David Hockney’s achievements to date with a vibrant selection across all media.

“The auction is your chance to get a Hockney piece at every price point, from entry-level works priced at £1,000 to higher-priced works for £250,000 or more.

“Contemporary edition collecting is something we are extremely passionate about, and creating curated sales like David Hockney allows us to interact with the community of collectors, while also reflecting on our approach to life. our innovative approach to meet current collector needs.”

Proceeds from the sale of these works will be used to fund new acquisitions of contemporary South African artists.
