David Moyes stunned after pitch invader ruined West Ham attack

David Moyes slammed the supporter who ran onto the pitch in the 1-1 Europa League draw with Lyon and ruined a promising West Ham attack.

The historic match for the Hammers ended on a sour note after a pitch invasor – the game’s second – jumped out of the home end and the 10-man West Ham actually launched a rare attack.

“I was stunned,” said the West Ham boss. “This is a really good football club that is doing so many good things.

“But those things tonight didn’t help, we were on a counterattack with a chance to score.”

The Hammers, who were in the quarter-finals of a major European competition for the first time in 41 years, faced them after Aaron Creswell was controversially sent off before half-time for a foul on Moussa Dembele.

The decision could have left West Ham with a mountain to climb ahead of the second leg in the French city overlooked by the Alps next week.

But Jarrod Bowen’s second goal in as many games after a month’s injury put the 10-man 1-0 ahead before Tottenham loanee Tanguy Ndombele leveled Lyon.

Still, a draw keeps West Ham’s dream of a place in the semi-finals, against either Barcelona or Eintracht Frankfurt, well and truly alive.

It promises to be a sharp second leg in France’s culinary capital after tempers occasionally boiled over, while Dembele’s Cristiano Ronaldo-esque wink after Creswell’s red card will not have gone unnoticed in the Hammers’ ranks.

Moyes was cautioned by German referee Felix Zwayer for protesting the half-time red card but refused to be drawn on the official or the decision.

He added: “The only thing I will say is that there was a tackle on Bowen that was a foul. It was the same stage of play as the red card and I would have expected VAR to do something about it.

“I’m certainly not going to talk about the referee, not at all.

“It wasn’t a good performance from us, but it was a resilient performance in the second half with 10 men.

“We didn’t have much possession in the second half. They were very good technically, but we defended well and gave them a hard time.”

Lyon may have had a volatile season domestically – they are currently ninth in Ligue 1 – but they are unbeaten in the competition, beating Porto in the last 16.

They are also veteran European fighters and displayed their darker arts repertoire, which infuriated West Ham as Jerome Boateng and Ndombele both stayed down after no foul was given.

“I think the games in Europe, the way they’re played, we’ve moved away from soft free-kicks in this country,” said Moyes.

“I think the referees we had were good and let the game flow. But this game never had a chance to flow.

“We have a really difficult game ahead of us but that’s what we expected. The first leg is always difficult and it’s difficult to get a decisive result.

“The game is very open, I would have taken that at half-time.”
