Dawn French said her friendship with comedian Jennifer Saunders was like a marriage.
She added that although they didn’t like Jennifer very much at first when they met in drama school in the 1970s, they quickly became close to the point where they “fall in love”.
Dawn said: “I really didn’t like Jen that much in the first place because she was pretty classy, or I thought she was but she wasn’t really. I had to share an apartment with her.
“But as soon as I got rid of my prejudices about her, which I still have to this day – the prejudice against classy people, they have to prove their worth to me – I thought, ‘She’s really cool.’
“We were just kids to each other, enjoying showing each other out and really loving each other. Because we were friends first and this career was the result of how we took great care to ensure our love. How are you preserved.”
Dawn, 64, said she and Jennifer, 63, get along so well, they’ve never had a “full line”.
She told Looking for humor podcast: “We compromise, like a marriage, I guess.”
Dawn added that she agrees to several projects just to spend time with Jennifer.
The pair, best known for their BBC sketch show French and Saunders, will perform together this month in a fake repair shop for Comic Relief.
