A woman who was pronounced dead after a car crash shocked mourners at her funeral by banging on the coffin and showing signs of life.

Rosa Isabel Cespedes Callaca interrupted her own funeral last week with stunned family members who heard a noise coming from her coffin at a service in the Peruvian city of Lambayque.

She had been reported as a fatal victim after being involved in a catastrophic crash that also killed her brother-in-law, the reported Daily Star.

Her three nephews were seriously injured after the incident on the Chiclayo-Picsi road in the region.

After the tragedy, Rosa was placed in a coffin before her funeral last Tuesday, but mourners gasped when they heard noises as the service began.

Her relatives, who had lifted the coffin onto their shoulders, immediately lowered it and opened the lid to find her alive and staring at her.

Cemetery warden Juan Segundo Cajo commented: “[She] opened his eyes and sweated. I immediately went to my office and called the police.”

Her family collected the coffin and took it to the Ferrenafe reference hospital in Lambayeque, with Rosa still inside, Metro reports.

Concerned medics put Rosa on life support after noticing she had weak vital signs, but sadly she died a few hours later.

Her family is turning to public health chiefs for answers to find out why she was pronounced dead ‘in the first place’.

Her aunt told local media: “We want to know why my niece reacted yesterday when we took her to the funeral.

“We have the videos of her pushing and touching the coffin.”

Rosa’s relatives believe she may have been in a coma after the accident, which may be why medics thought she was dead.

Police in Peru are now investigating the incident, which took place at Lambayeque Regional Hospital, where she was first treated.
