Decision due on Telscombe Cliffs Apartments

PROPOSALS to build a new house at Telscombe Cliffs are due to be presented to Lewes planners next week.

On Wednesday (3 August) Lewes District Council’s planning committee will consider a proposal to demolish a bungalow on South Cliff Road and replace it with a three-storey apartment building.

The proposed building recommended for approval would contain eight two and three bedroom apartments.

In a report for the committee to consider, a council planning officer said: “The development is expected to integrate well with the existing streetscape and have no adverse environmental or residential impacts.

“It is therefore recommended that the application be approved subject to conditions.”

Although the proposals were recommended for approval, there were a number of objections from local residents. These objections raise a variety of concerns, including fears that the building’s design and appearance would be inappropriate and obtrusive, and would block light onto surrounding properties.

Similar objections were raised by Telscombe Town Council.

However, the concerns are disputed by Lewes planning officials. According to their report, the shading would only affect a single window on a single property already affected by the shading. This would not be a reason to oppose the scheme, they advise.

Concerns were also raised about parking, as the seven spaces provided would fall short of the number set by East Sussex Highways. However, officials believe this issue can be overcome due to the site’s proximity to public transport links.
