Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham were severely warned against joining Manchester United from Liverpool Legend Jamie Carragher.

Both Rice and Bellingham are believed to be on the Red Devils’ shopping list for the upcoming game Summer transfer window. United are keen to improve their midfield options as that area of their squad has been revealed to be lightweight throughout the season.

The call for a new central midfielder has been a clear demand for some time and is even more so after this year’s terrible season. United have started to rebuild finally confirmed Erik ten Hag as their new manager from the end of the current season.

Another building block of the rebuild will be a complete overhaul of the summer window roster, with the current group of players having severely underperformed. Rice and Bellingham will both be targets that have impressed west ham or Borussia Dortmund.

But Carragher believes the duo should avoid a move to Old Trafford given the current chaos sweeping the club. He believes the shocking decline in the United squad’s performances should deter the duo from joining the club.

“Ten Hag’s immediate challenge is to assess why such a massive investment in the team has not produced the required results. I understand fans’ anger at the Glazers and why they want them out,” Carragher wrote in a column for the Daily Telegraph.

“That’s no excuse for the massive underperformance of the players considering this is one of the most expensive squads in world football and many of these players are making in excess of £250,000 a week. It’s hard to think of a purchase from United over the past nine years who have improved since arriving at Old Trafford.

“Even those who got off to an encouraging start have fallen behind. When Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Jadon Sancho joined United, there was a feeling that the club was going in the right direction with young English talent. Now they look scared to play at Old Trafford.

“If I were Declan Rice or Jude Bellingham and watching the troubles of their England team-mates – unless my motivation was a big payday – I would walk a mile when United called. Ferguson era, while the team has been delivering inferior displays on it.

“Do you really think these players who are getting these massive checks are sitting in the dressing room discussing how bad the Glazers are for the club? Nonsense. But for all its negative aspects, Ten Hag also has a lot in its favor. None of his immediate predecessors have done that with the club at such a low ebb. The only way is up.”

However, Carragher believes Ten Hag will be able to sign players at the higher end of the transfer market, even if Rice and Bellingham avoid a move. He urged the Red Devils to follow Liverpool’s lead as they start rebuilding their squad.

“Liverpool needed the kind of cultural reset that Ten Hag has to oversee. At clubs of United’s caliber, when you get the right appointment – and sign the right players to strengthen the backbone of your team – the mood changes quickly,” he added.

“Top managers will turn it around within two years. Klopp did that. Klopp didn’t do that by committing himself to transfer auctions Champions League ‘s most expensive player. Ten Hag has the advantage of being able to compete at the top end of the transfer market if he wants to.”
