Defense tells jury Ryan Giggs is not on trial because he was an impulsive womanizer.

Ryan Giggs’ ex-girlfriend is a “despised” woman who is “angry” at his inability to stay faithful to her, the ex-Manchester United footballer’s lawyer has said.

In his closing statement to the panel of seven women and five men, Chris Daw QC said: “This case is about infidelity”.

Giggs, 48, denies hitting Kate Greville, 38, on November 1, 2020 at his home in Worsley, Greater Manchester, and also intentionally elbowed her 26-year-old sister Emma.

He has also pleaded not guilty to controlling and coercing Kate Greville between August 2017 and November 2020.

Mr Daw asked the Manchester Crown Court jury to consider whether prosecutors had “picked” evidence.

The court heard 19,671 messages between the couple during their six-year on-off relationship had been recovered as part of the investigation into the allegations.

Mr Daw said: “Ryan Giggs is not on trial because he is human or has human error and sometimes, very rarely, uses extreme language. His feelings escaped him on very few occasions.

“From these thousands of messages, prosecutors have managed to point to a tiny number of examples of loss of speech control. Not a single indication that he was violent towards her.”

He said there were “dozens and dozens” of messages accusing Giggs of cheating and not trusting him.

Mr Daw told jurors the defendant was not on trial because he was “flirtatious, an impulsive womanizer, an adulterer, a liar or a con man”.

Earlier, the jury was told the truth had caught up with Giggs and “it’s time to pay the price.”

In his closing speech, Prosecutor Peter Wright QC reiterated that there are “two very different Ryan Giggs”.

He said: “The one that’s exposed for public consumption and the Ryan Giggs that occasionally exists behind closed doors.”

Mr Wright urged the jury to conclude that the defendant “is not a matter of sheer beauty, but if the mask slips” is the person who can handle the charges he faces.

He added: “This case is about one man’s abuse of power over another human being.

“It’s about a man who thinks or thought he could do whatever he wanted about his treatment of Kate Greville and get away with it because the sad history of that relationship revealed that his excesses were endured by her , excused and kept private.

“But all that changed on the night of November 1st when the basis on which he operated crumbled before his eyes and the public persona of Ryan Giggs came under public scrutiny.

“[That was] When the woman he had controlled or coerced in their protracted, fractious, and volatile relationship had the courage to stand up to him.”

The process goes on. Defense tells jury Ryan Giggs is not on trial because he was an impulsive womanizer.
