Denise Van Outen has had a successful career since her Big Breakfast days, but she has admitted she had to tell a lie to even get the gig.
The blonde presenter, 47, started as a weather fairy in the popular early bird show of yore and continued her meteoric rise in the years that followed.
However, she has now admitted that she wasn’t completely honest when she managed to land her first role.
Documenting her beginnings in her new book, A Bit Of Me, she says, “When it came to doing jobs, I hadn’t lost my creative streak when it came to asserting my suitability for a particular role.
“I wasn’t shy, sometimes I even put things on my resume that I hadn’t done.”
She admits that before she invented the lie, she used to think about what events she could possibly be a part of, before saying that with the power of the internet it wouldn’t be possible these days.
“Of course, with Google and the internet, you can’t get away with something like that anymore, but at the time I was pretty content with bolstering my credentials when needed,” she wrote.
On The Big Breakfast, she added, “What did I know about reading a weather report? Didn’t one have to have the right meteorological knowledge for this?
“What I knew was that this was a fantastic opportunity, Channel 4 was doing a major relaunch of the show and that’s where I came in.”
She confessed that she “gave it all” in her attempt to get the job and recounted how she assured interviewers she could write her own weather reports after claiming to have taken a meteorology course.
While she says bosses knew she was exaggerating, they still gave her a chance when her “brazen” lies showed she was “definitely the girl for the job.”
Denise shared how she was originally supposed to read the weather in a bikini but refused, which led her to the next idea, to take to the skies.
The Big Breakfast was a huge hit between 1992 and 2002, with Denise joining in 1996.
She later appeared on Who Dares, Sings!, The Friday Night Project and is currently a regular on ITV’s daytime talk show Loose Women.
She also provides the narration for the hit reality TV show The Only Way Is Essex.
