Denise Van Outen had to undergo “major surgery” after she injured herself during a dance on stage.
The TV presenter took part in the BBC’s Latin dance and show in 2012, and after a fall with professional partner James Jordan, she managed to slip three discs into her spinal cord.
After her horrific injury, Denise still performed in the show’s finale, but she had to undergo surgery, which left her with a scar on her throat, something she frequently asks about interested fans.
She kept her injury and surgery private, but revealed it in her new bio.
Speaking on Steph’s Packed Lunch on Channel 4, she said: “I have a scar on my neck – whenever I watch live TV I always get texts saying ‘what’s the scar? Do you have a scar? Thyroid problems? You need to go get checked for cancer’, but it was actually due to an injury I had years ago right after seriously coming to the ballroom.
“I fell and hit my head and slipped three discs into my spinal cord, so I had to have a pretty big surgery. Now that it’s done, I don’t have to make excuses. It’s a personal matter. for me at the time, it was a major surgery with quite a bit of recovery, so I kept it a secret. happy about it, I’m fine.”

She admits that it’s difficult to constantly be asked about scars, especially when social media makes celebrities as accessible as they are today.
“It’s hard – you have those personal jokes where you’re self-conscious and you still want to do your job and love what you do,” she confessed on the lunchtime show, “But then when with social media, people have direct contact with you and they always have something to say and sometimes you’re just not ready to openly discuss it.”
Denise previously admitted she was worried she wouldn’t be able to sing again because her voice box had to be taken out.
“They were worried that I would never be able to sing again, because you might get hoarse after such an operation,” she said recently, “The rehabilitation took quite a while, but I kept I’m keeping this a secret just because the more I’m out there and I talk about everything, there’s some things in my life that I want to keep private.
“I’m not looking for public sympathy, I just want to heal myself.”
