Denise Van Outen Discusses ‘Pain’ After Eddie Breakup

Denise Van Outen worries about the impact her relationship with the cheating Eddie Boxshall will have on her daughter.

The TV presenter shares 12-year-old Betsy with ex-husband Lee Mead, to whom she was married from 2009 to 2013.

She then had a relationship with commodity trader Eddie for seven years until they shut down operations in January 2022.

The couple had planned to get married later this year – until Denise discovered Eddie was texting other women behind her back.

The Celebrity Gogglebox star revealed that it affected her so much that she had to turn to therapy to cope.

Talking about her fear for her daughter, Denise said her biggest worry was growing up Betsy “thinks that relationships don’t work out”.

She told her best friend Fearne Cotton’s Happy Place podcast: “Now the kids have phones and they’re at school where they’re going to read and listen to everything, so I have to be completely honest with her.

“And I really wanted to be honest with her. I think it’s important for your child to have that honesty.

“There are things I probably haven’t told her or that I’ve tried to hold back. There were times when I was really upset and you didn’t want your kids to see you upset because it was a horrible thing.

“But at the same time, she needs to know. I can’t just brush everything under the rug.”

Denise revealed that she’s struggling to find the right balance to say how much to Betsy – and still doesn’t know if she’s doing it the right way.

She continued: “As a parent, it is my responsibility to guide her through life and I worry she will think things are going wrong.

“That she’s going to go into relationships when she’s older is probably not with an open heart, and that’s something I don’t want to happen. That is a difficult place. “

Fearne said she didn’t think it was going to happen because Denise and Betsy’s father Lee has such a great friendship.

Although they’re no longer together, Denise says she and Lee “really help each other out” when it comes to co-parenting.

“What’s really amazing is that even through it all, she’s got that solid foundation. She has her father. He’s a great dad,” she added.

Denise says she and Betsy are ‘best friends’

Denise admits she’s “still not fully healed” following the shock of her split from Eddie five months ago.

And she shared that she was doing therapy for the first time in her life, although in the book she says she considered it in her twenties but never did it.

Explaining why she decided to seek help at the age of 48, Denise said: “I think I always thought I could handle things on my own.

“Because everything that happened has sunk me, literally sunk me. Then I want to start to understand why this seems to be a pattern.

“Not just the other way around, but why do I allow myself to sometimes try to fix things and make things right.

“I think I’m a fixer – I try to fix people – and sometimes that hurts myself. I think that’s why I’m trying to understand.”
