Denise Welch opens up about her past drinking problems in February

Denise Welch announced she’s “happier and healthier” than ever as she celebrated 10 years sober.

The Loose Women star took to her Instagram page to share a snap of her side by side before and after she had her very last drink.

She pointed out to fans how to tell the difference in the look in their eyes.

“I still have some lines and wrinkles, but it’s in the eyes. They have it,” she explained. “10 years ago today I drank my last alcoholic drink. Haven’t had a sherry bite since and it was the best decision I’ve ever made.

“It has changed my life and the lives of everyone I love and who love me. I self-medicated for years and the memory of that time haunts me. Guilt and shame are very different. Guilt is something most of us have. Especially mothers. “

Denise continued: “Shame is a different animal. It took me years to get over them and I still have nightmares that take me days to recover from. The thought of going back there scares me.

“The impact my sobriety has had on my family is what I’m most proud of. My children can have amazing lives because they don’t have to worry about their mother.”

She went on to talk about her husband and how they make a great marriage as they “take time to nurture and nurture.”

The TV star also explained how her father Vin, who died last year, died knowing “she was in a good place with a good man.”

“My sister looks at me with respect that’s long gone,” Denise added. “If alcohol makes you miserable, sad, anxious, embarrassed, and not a little dizzy on a Saturday night, then you’re drinking too much.

“Quitting isn’t easy and staying sober is a lifestyle, but it’s a much, much better life.
So now I’m happier and healthier in my 60s than I was in my 40s and 50s.”

She concluded: “Today I am thinking of all those who are on the cusp of a great change and I can tell you that this will be the best thing you will ever do.

“And to my friends who like to have a drink and have no problem with it… raise a glass to me today on my wedding anniversary!!!”

Denise has been open about her previous struggles with alcohol as it took over her life for around 15 years.

She once revealed that her husband Lincoln helped her and even got sober with her.
