Prince Nikolai of Denmark said he was “shocked and confused” after his grandmother, Queen Margrethe, stripped him and his siblings of their royal titles in hopes they could lead more normal lives.
In a statement on Wednesday, the monarch announced that she wanted to free the children of her second son, Prince Joachim, from “the obligations that formal membership of the Danish royal family as an institution entails”.
Nikolai and his three siblings, Princes Felix, 20, Henrik, 13, and Princess Athena, 10, will no longer be able to use their royal titles and will instead be known as the Count and Countess of Monzepat.
The 23-year-old Royal told the Danish newspaper Extra Bladet that the siblings are “very sad” about the change.
“We are, as my parents said, shocked by this decision and how quickly it actually went,” Nikolai said. “I’m very confused as to why this has to happen this way.”
Nikolai added that he was only informed about the change “just over a week ago” but is even more upset now that it was publicly announced.
“Like I said, we were shocked. But it’s clear that now that it’s out, it’s hitting even harder,” he said.
In her statement, Queen Margarethe said all four siblings will keep their places in the order of succession.
“Her Majesty The Queen wishes to provide the framework for the four grandchildren to be able to manage their lives to a much greater extent, without being constrained by the special considerations and duties that formal membership of the Royal House of Denmark entails as an institution “, the statement said.
Nikolai’s comments come after his father told Joachim Extra Bladet that the children did not understand their grandmother’s decision.
“It’s never fun to see your children being abused like that,” Joachim said.
Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg, mother of Nikolai and Felix and ex-wife of Prince Joachim, has also shared her confusion at the news.
In a statement to CNNAlexandra’s press secretary, Helle von Wildenrath Løvgreen, said the countess “can’t believe why and why now”.
“There’s no good reason. They would lose their titles anyway if they got married one day,” Løvgreen said.
“Your sons are young men, so maybe they could get married in the near future, so why not wait until that day for the titles to go away on a lucky day?”
