It slammed the Channel 4 series about a group of teenagers growing up in Northern Ireland in the 1990s and is due to end with the third series, which is currently on the air.

The extended episode, which will explore a pivotal moment in Northern Ireland history, will air the same week as the third series finale.

Set to take place the week of the Good Friday Agreement referendum, the episode threatens to overshadow Erin and Orla’s 18th birthday celebration together.

Series creator and writer Lisa McGee said: “Like all the best bands of the ’90s, I couldn’t resist ending our farewell tour with an encore for our loyal fans.

“I’m pleased to announce that we will be returning for an extended special – which will air the same week as our last episode.

“The special explores the historic and momentous vote on the Good Friday Agreement, which coincides with the gang coming of age and entering adulthood just as Northern Ireland embarks on a new future.

“I’m so proud of this show and of our incredible cast and crew and of everything we’ve accomplished over the past five years.

“What a journey it was. I’m so thankful that Channel 4 gave me the space to wrap up the stories of these characters who mean so much to me with this special. I really hope the fans love it as much as I do.
