Derry Girls creator explains why the Spice Girls’ Union Jack dress was missing from the latest episode

Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee has revealed the iconic Spice Girls Union Jack dress is missing from the show’s latest episode as it would have been “not okay” for Catholics in the city.

he latest episode of the third and final season of the Channel 4 comedy aired on Tuesday and saw the girls pay a ’90s-style homage to the famous British pop group.

Orla, Erin, Clare, Michelle and James all attend the Children in Need Stars in their Eyes night at school during the episode – while singing the 1997 Spice Girls hit Who Do You Think You Are? smash

Of course, the girls also wear the classic Spice Girls outfits, with Clare as a baby, Michelle as Scary, Orla as Sporty and James in the little black dress from Posh Spice.

However, some fans noted that Erin, as Ginger Spice, lacked the classic Union Jack dress, which screenwriter McGee said was intentional given the city’s political sensitivities.

“Erin is Ginger but we didn’t do the Union Jack dress because that wouldn’t have been okay with Derry Catholics. Our amazing costume designer made her a sparkly dress with a peace sign on it,” she said Digital Spy.

Speaking about the possibility of playing the routine, Saoirse-Monica Jackson said it was a “dream come true”.

“I told Lisa earlier it’s like she wrote Derry Girls around the Spice Girls because each of us is so different and it’s the perfect cast,” she said.

“It’s like your childhood dream of being Geri Halliwell on TV and wearing the auburn wig that I think really suits me and doing the dance routine with your friends and going to a recording studio and singing the lyrics. It’s nice, a dream come true.”

Jamie-Lee O’Donnell added: “One of my absolute goals in life has been to be in the Spice Girls, in the band proper, and I think I’m close enough with that scene. That’s close enough, enough for me to get a taste of it. And I am delighted. We’re like a band anyway.”

Of the routine, McGee tweeted, “I have to thank our incredible choreographer @jooney1 and our amazing musical director @garthyb0y – the Derry Spice Girls just wouldn’t have been possible without them.”

She also thanked fans after the final episode, adding on social media: “Guys we really feel the love tonight. We really appreciate you all. We’re just a small show doing our best and you make all the hard work worth it. Thanks.”
