Derry Girls star Zoe Brown was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 4.

She and her twin sister Sophie played Anna, the younger sister of Erin Quinn on the popular Irish Channel 4 sitcom.

Zoe’s mother Leah Brown said her daughter was still “smiling” after starting cancer treatment.

“She was in the theater so many times, she had a lumbar puncture to put chemicals in the spinal fluid and that was done under anesthesia,” she said. Belfast Live.

“You never think your child will be going to sing and in the past seven weeks, she has so many times.”

She explained that little Zoe was worried because she was losing her hair and said: “I know it’s not a major concern, but it’s the saddest thing for her.

“Zoe just has the longest, thickest hair and that’s the first thing people talk about when they see her.”

Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee sent her best wishes to the family, writing, “I’m so sorry Zoe had to go through this.

“She is the most amazing little girl and we are so lucky to have her as part of our Derry Girls family.

“I’m sending her and her family strength and love.”

Zoe will need treatment until Christmas and will have chemotherapy for two years after that.

One JustGiving page was set up by a family friend to help with medical expenses.

It read: “Zoe twin to Sophie, 4, was diagnosed in May that she had acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

“It all happened so fast, she had three blood transfusions then had a bone marrow biopsy. Her treatment included a lot of different chemotherapy drugs.

“The side effects of all these drugs were so brutal, she could barely walk for a minute and had lost all of her hair.

“It’s been a long road ahead so with the help of the community we can all come together and do what we can to help the family.”

The fundraiser was originally set to raise £500 but is already close to £5,000.

Derry Girls follows the lives of a group of teenagers living in Northern Ireland during the Troubles.

It is based on creator Lisa McGee’s own experiences growing up in Derry in the ’90s and is the most successful Channel 4 comedy since Father Ted.

The hit show first aired in 2018 and just finished its third and final season, ending with the Good Friday Deal.

While we’ve said goodbye to Derry Girls for now, Lisa doesn’t rule out the possibility of a movie for years to come.
