Derry Girls writer shares true story behind tragic finale death

Channel 4’s Derry Girls series three aired a tragic death, ahead of the final episode of the hit show airing on Wednesday night

Viewers were left in tears at the end of last night’s Derry Girls, when Clare’s father died suddenly from an aneurysm on the Channel 4 series.

Yesterday, showrunner Lisa McGee revealed heartbreaking scenes that were inspired by a true story.

She explained: “My friend’s father passed away suddenly when we were about that age.

“It was a real shock, we grew up in this place where a lot of the unpredictable happens and we worry about violence – and this is something that can happen to anyone. .

“Something changed in my friendship group when it happened, we all grew up.”

McGee, 50, said she remains friends with the real life partners who inspired the hit series. “They said they were embarrassed about it but they told everyone,” she laughs.

“And after one episode, I got about 200 messages in the WhatsApp group.”

Her long-running finale for Derry Girls airs tonight, featuring a celebrity guest linked to an episode of the previous series.

In the plot, five friends are voting for the Good Friday Deal, and viewers discover that hot-headed Michelle is more closely connected to the Troubles than anyone realizes.

McGee, a genuine Derry girl, said her goal is first comedy, second history lesson. “We just wanted to make people laugh. And along the way, it taught people a little bit about where I came from. “

She said that there will most likely be a spin-off or sequel for the much-loved characters. “I would love to at some point. It’s just finding the right thing. ”

It may be related to Jamie Dornan, whose schedule has prevented him from appearing this time (but check out Ardal O’Hanlon!).

Lisa said: “Jamie is a fan of the show and a very funny guy – next time.” Bring it in.

Derry Girls ends Wednesday at 9pm on Channel 4 and can be watched on All4.
