Will Patching broke UCD’s resolve with a booming free-kick as Derry City moved six points clear at the top of the Premier Division table.
Onan Boyce added a second goal to give Ruaidhrí Higgins’ side another capital gain as they have now beaten all five Dublin clubs in their unbeaten start to the season.
Derry’s fifth win in a row means UCD are still waiting for their first as they sit three points off bottom.
Were it not for the brilliance of UCD goalkeeper Lorcan Healy and the frame of his goal, Derry might have scored several goals at the break.
The visitors created the first real chance of the game in the 10th minute when Matty Smith made an excellent save from Healy.
The college keeper was back minutes later when he tipped Cameron Dummigan’s drive onto a post.
McGonigle then wasted a one-on-one as he fired wide before the goal’s frame came to the students’ rescue again in the 26th minute; Brandon Kavanagh’s plunging volley shoots back from under the crossbar.
Healy did well again, pushing a Patrick McEleney drive around a post early in the second half.
Patching then saw a massive shot shave the bar, with skipper Eoin Toal disallowing a goal as the pressure mounted.
But the dominant Derry was undeniable as they finally got their fully deserved breakthrough in the 67th minute.
Jamie McGonigle was fouled about 25 yards away.
Patching made no mistake with a direct free-kick that sent his fourth goal of the season into the bottom corner.
Derry sealed his victory in the 78th minute.
Cameron McJannet’s low cross from the left ran to the far post where right-back Boyce found a side foot past Healy.
