Designer Helen Delany: ‘I love Wes Anderson’s pacing, color and sound’
Helen Delany, London-based designer/illustrator, born in Dublin, is one half of trendy knitwear brand Electronic Sheep alongside Brenda Aherne. Their new tapestry ‘Notifications Off’ will be unveiled at First Fortnight at Dublin’s Project Arts Center on Friday before showings in London and Paris. Electronicsheep.com
I’m currently reading Nora by Irish writers Nuala O’Connor and acting class by American graphic novelist Nick Drnaso. I love these books, especially since I received them at the recent book signings.
Drnaso had to wait in long lines out the door but still managed to paint a small portrait of himself into each book. It’s all about drawings and dialogue – perfect for me, as I like to read slowly and pause while reading.
Nora – based on Nora Barnacle, wife of James Joyce – was not what I expected. I love how bold and realistic it is. It made me see Joyce in a new light.
MOVIE: Wes Anderson
I keep going back to my old favorites – classics like Royal Tenenbaums by Wes Anderson. I like the speed, color and sound of his movies, and I often have them on in the background while working.
I also love vintage sets and clothes. Last year, I saw an exhibit by Anderson that featured his props, artwork, miniature sets, and real costumes, so now I feel even more connected to the real thing. his imagination while watching his movies.
SONG: J Smoov
I’ve been alternating between digital radios (sohoradiolondon.com; nts.live) and my own Spotify playlist. The latter is mixed at random (heavy metal, folk, punk, alternative rock, rockabilly, jazz, classic, indie), depending on my mood.
Current and longtime favorites are ‘J Smoov’ by Stephen Malkmus and Jicks – I love his vocals and have watched them perform a lot live. Also is ‘Hopeless Hope’ by Crosby, Stills and Nash.

Plus the Irish artists (Thin Lizzy, Shane MacGowan, Brigid Mae Power, Virgin Prunes, Pet Lamb) that we at Electronic Sheep feature in our work.
Primavera in Barcelona is a favorite festival that I can’t wait for again. It was the perfect mix of my music and the bands, friends from Dublin and the nearby tapas bars.
