Desperate Putin could now launch nuclear weapons at Ukraine, ex-NATO chief warns – World News

Vladimir Putin is now desperate and his only way out may be to “escalate” the Ukraine invasion, which could mean over 600,000 more troops or even nuclear bombs, an ex-NATO commander has said

A desperate Vladimir Putin could “escalate” the Ukraine invasion and even use nuclear weapons as the only way out, a former NATO commander has said.

Putin’s invasion of Ukraine has resulted in Russian forces suffering far greater casualties than many had anticipated and failing to make any significant advances into their neighboring country.

At Monday’s Victory Day celebrations in Moscow, Putin cut a somber figure, unable to announce the desired breakthroughs.

And in the face of mounting pressure, Sir James Everard, a former NATO deputy supreme allied commander in Europe, said Putin could “significantly escalate” the invasion of over 600,000 troops or even go for the nuclear option.

He said that because of the failures in Ukraine so far, the Russian president is now being threatened by army generals.

“He’s in a terrible place. It was entirely his own making,” said Sir James. “I can’t imagine him achieving his goals without escalating conventionally.”

He also referred to a Telegram statement by the Wagner group that said Russia needed “600,000 to 800,000 men” to defeat Ukraine. The Wagner mercenary group is said to have close ties to Moscow.

Sir James said a nuclear attack on Ukraine remains a problem, although it would seem insane by “human logic” and would also represent a “major strategic failure”.

But he added: “Where Putin has an advantage over the West is that he has a family of nuclear weapons. From the very small to the big city destroyers. In Britain we have the city wreckers, but not the small ones. Maybe.” For Putin, the nuclear escalation is not as great as we see it. I still think it would be horrific.”

At the same time, Joe Biden said Monday he was concerned that Putin had no way out of the Ukraine war, and the US president said he was trying to figure out what to do about it.

Biden said at a political fundraiser in a Washington suburb that Putin mistakenly believed invading Ukraine would dissolve NATO and the European Union.

Instead, the United States and many European countries have sided with Ukraine.

Russia’s attack on Kyiv was repulsed by strong Ukrainian resistance in March.

Russia, which describes the invasion as “a special military operation,” sent more troops to Ukraine last month for a huge offensive in the eastern part of the country, but gains have been slow.

Biden said Putin is a very calculating man and the problem he’s worried about now is that the Russian leader “has no way out right now and I’m trying to figure out what we’re going to do about it.”
