Destiny 2 teases the possibility of a third Darkness subclass

Please complete the trio of Darkness subclasses!

Destiny 2’s Lightfall DLC is fast approaching, as is the arrival of the second Darkness subclass, Strand. Strand seems just as powerful, if not more, and just as fun as Stasis when Beyond Light was released a few years ago.

However, in a recent interview with press start, Bungie teases the possibility of a sixth subclass joining the fray in the future. In that conversation, Bungie Design Lead Kevin Yanes and Features Lead Eric Smith were both asked numerous questions about the upcoming Lightfall DLC.

One of those questions was whether or not they wanted to add another “grand fantasy” subclass to the game.

“If you’d asked me about Stasis, I wouldn’t have given the slightest thought to what Strand might be. I think if we sit down and think about a room with new powers, I have all the faith in the world that the team we’ve put together for the combat gameplay can pull it off.”

Of course, this might be a coy answer, given that development for a subclass takes well over a year, and if they were going to release it for next year’s Final Shape DLC, production would have already started. The Final Shape DLC is currently planned to be the last known DLC for the game, although Bungie has stated that it won’t be the end of Destiny 2, just the end of the Light and Darkness saga that has taken place since Destiny 1.

In any case, adding another subclass would make sense as it would end the saga with three light subclasses and only two dark subclasses, which wouldn’t feel right. While years in a row with new subclasses would also be far-fetched, it’s safe to assume that Bungie has something in store for next year.
