Celebrities and athletes showing their love for anime are nothing new at this point, but Detroit Lions running back Jamaal Williams has proven his fan base is a notch higher.
In a recent NFL prime-time introductory role shown ahead of the Jan. 8 Detroit Lions-Green Bay Packers game, Williams introduced himself as “the leader of the ‘First Swag Kazekage, leader of the Hidden Village of the Def.'” He did this while wearing a Village Hidden in the Sand shinobi headband, which he’s known to have worn when appearing on camera, and said the line with a huge grin on his face.
The clip only lasts a few seconds, but stands in stark contrast to the players’ more serious job interviews. Reddit user Strawberry taste captured and posted the moment when William’s statement was greeted with cheers, applause and lots of laughter. Likewise, being an anime fan has sparked discussions about the prevalence and acceptance of it, largely thanks to the open admiration of celebrities and pro athletes for shows like Naruto, Dragon Ball, and other shonen offerings.
The post can be found below for those who would like to see the bit for themselves.
This is far from the first time Williams has announced his love for anime and nerd culture in general. Another viral video shows him correcting a sportswriter who interviewed him for mispronouncing Pokémon. He not only wears his Sand Village headband, but also a hoodie with images from the Naruto anime.
