A nine-year-old girl was shot dead when a gunman chased another man into her Liverpool home and “in complete disregard” opened fire on everyone else in the property.
Erseyside Police named the young woman Olivia Pratt-Korbel and said her family were “absolutely devastated, heartbroken and heartbroken” following the incident on Kingsheath Avenue, Knotty Ash, on Monday night.
Speech at a press conference at Liverpool Police Headquarters today, Chief Constable Serena Kennedy called on anyone with information to come forward, adding, “This is not the time for anyone who knows who is responsible for this shooting to shut up.”
Olivia was found with a gunshot wound to the chest when officers arrived at the scene around 10pm on Monday and was rushed to hospital in critical condition, where she died.
Ms Kennedy said police believe a 35-year-old man was being pursued in the area by a gunman who shot at him.
She said: “The man who was being followed entered Olivia’s home and the perpetrator ran after him and fired a series of shots with no regard for Olivia and her family, who had no connection to the shooter or the man , who forced his way into.
“Unfortunately, Olivia was fatally wounded when the gunman shot at the man who was trying to break into the house, and her mother was also shot in the wrist.
“The 35-year-old suspect suffered multiple shots in the upper body.
“While Olivia was dying, his friends picked him up and took him to the hospital.”
Detective Chief Superintendent Mark Kameen, chief investigator at Merseyside Police, said the gunman, wearing a black peaked balaclava and black gloves, entered the building as Olivia’s mother, Cheryl, was trying to shut the door.
He said: “Olivia’s mum, Cheryl, appears to have opened the door to her property to see what’s going on outside.
“A shot was fired which we believe hit Cheryl, injuring her and then mortally wounding Olivia. We think Olivia was right behind Cheryl at the time.”
The force also asked the “criminal fraternity” in Liverpool for information, adding that the incident “crosses every single line”.
The murder came 15 years to the day after 11-year-old Rhys Jones was shot dead in the Croxteth area of Liverpool.
