Diablo Immortal will be launched on mobile and PC in most parts of the world on June 2nd. While the game was designed for mobile from the start, Blizzard announced that the game will also go into open beta on PC on the same day.
June 2nd applies to most of the world, with additional regions gaining access to the game a few weeks later. A recent pre-registration campaign attracted over 30 million players to register their interest in the game and unlock the Horadric cosmetic set.
According to a new dev blog accompanying the announcement, releasing it on PC was something the team went back and forth over. They weren’t sure if releasing a game originally built from the ground up for mobile would do it justice, but requests have been coming in from the community since then Diablo has a sizable PC audience and didn’t want them to get an inferior emulator experience, they decided to push a standalone PC release.
Because of this decision, cross-play community building begins on day one.
“Diablo immortal on PC is a Blizzard experiment. We didn’t originally intend to bring this game to desktop – but as soon as it became possible, we knew we had to take the time to make it happen. If you’re a longtime Diablo player, the outcome will feel a little different than other PC Diablo games – but we’re really looking forward to killing the demons of Immortal with our mouse, and we hope you will be too .”
To release the game on PC, they swapped the controls from swipe and tap back to classic mouse and keyboard. You left click and move your character and attack while there are keys to match to use your skills and potions. However, WASD directional controls are available if you want to use them. Another factor they considered was the cases in the mobile game where you are expected to move and attack at the same time. There will also be full controller support.
