Diana photographer Patrick Demarchelier dies aged 78

]Renowned photographer Patrick Demarchelier, who has worked with high profile figures including Diana, Princess of Wales, has died aged 78.

he French photographer Diana once described as “a dream” has worked with many of Hollywood’s biggest stars.

This was announced by his representatives on Instagram on Thursday.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Patrick Demarchelier on March 31, 2022 at the age of 78,” the post read.

“He is survived by his wife Mia, his three sons Gustaf, Arthur, Victor and three grandchildren.”

During his extensive career, Demarchelier photographed a number of high profile celebrities including Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez and Madonna.

He also produced the cover for Vogue’s December 1991 issue, which featured Diana.

Demarchelier has worked for a variety of other top magazines including Harper’s Bazaar, Elle and Rolling Stone, as well as many high-end fashion brands.

He helped shoot ad campaigns for Dior, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Tommy Hilfiger, and Carolina Herrera.

His skills in the industry even earned him a mention in the 2006 film Devil Wears Prada when he is wanted by fashion giant Miranda Priestly, played by Meryl Streep.

Among those paying tribute to Demarchelier were US designer Vera Wang and models such as Bella Hadid, Cindy Crawford and Hailey Bieber.

Wang said she was “deeply saddened” by the news and would “always appreciate” Demarchelier’s talent and kindness.

Sharing a picture from one of their last shoots together, she wrote: “We started our fashion journey together with a SHOPHOUND shoot for American Vogue where he met his wife Mia.

“I will always appreciate his talent, his kindness and our long history. So many sessions for Vogue, then advertising campaigns for the Vera Wang company.

“I’m sad to the core. I send my love to his wife and family. May he rest in peace forever.”

Celebrity hairstylist Sam McKnight, who has also worked with Diana, said he owes Demarchelier “so much”.

“Oh I’m so sad to hear that,” he replied to the original post.

“I had the BEST TIMES with Patrick, endless incredible iconic photos, wonderful memories, a lifetime of laughs, I owe him so much, there will never be another.

“Condolences to his beloved family.”

Posting on his own Instagram, he added: “Oh dear Patrick how you made us laugh. Thank you for having me with you for the nice ride. Rest in peace my friend.”

Model Bella Hadid said: “I am grateful that I was fortunate enough to be in front of your lens.

“The softest, the most legendary, soft but full of life. You will miss Patrick. Rest in peace. I will miss this day and you dear Patrick.”

Crawford shared pictures of himself taken by Demarchelier and said: “Rest in peace @patrickdemarchelier. Thank you for so many great memories and beautiful, timeless pictures.”

Actress Kate Hudson said she “always enjoyed” working with the photographer and sent “a ton of love” to his family.

“So many memories. I have had the pleasure of being photographed often by Patrick and have always thoroughly enjoyed him and his team,” she wrote.

“Sending a lot of love to his family.”
