Diane Kruger on motherhood: I didn’t want to have kids for a long time

Actress Diane Kruger says motherhood hasn’t always been smooth sailing, but the arrival of daughter Nova has changed her life “in the best way possible”.

The 46-year-old star, best known for playing Helen in the 2004 war drama Troy, welcomed her first child in late 2018 with The Walking Dead actor Norman Reedus.

The actress and former fashion model began dating Reedus in 2016 shortly after splitting with her partner of 10 years, Dawson’s Creek actor Joshua Jackson.

“I didn’t want to have children for a long time. I really like my life as it is now,” she told Tatler magazine.

“In my late thirties, I started thinking about it but I wasn’t in a position in my relationship, or anything, where that was going to happen, and so I gave up hope and I think it’s just too late.

“The arrival of Nova changed my life, our lives in the best possible way. It’s amazing when you think you’re one thing but you’re meant to do something completely different.”

Kruger said she thinks life has given you the things you least expect “but need them most”, and talks about her changing approach to her daughter’s privacy .

“What you feel comfortable with will change over time,” she says. When she was first born, you really tried to shield her from all the eyes of the public. I feel so strongly about it, which I didn’t know I would be able to do.

“But when she was growing up she didn’t… We never showed her face, all our friends obviously knew what her name was and it was just tied to the book.

“It’s only natural to tell her and the world how special she is to us, and how much we name her.”

Kruger has previously starred in a series of films including the role of Bridget von Hammersmark in Quentin Tarantino’s 2009 war drama Inglourious Basterds and The 355 alongside Jessica Chastain and Penelope Cruz.

Her latest project is a mini-series about actress Marlene Dietrich, directed by Fatih Akin, with whom Kruger worked with in the 2017 German-language film In The Fade for which she was named an actress. Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival.

“He really has a knack for writing about women,” she said. He is sensitive to the idea of ​​(Dietrich) being an immigrant to America.

“We won’t start filming until the end of next year, so we have plenty of time to calculate.”
