Welcome to our spring gardening guide. The last two years have been extremely tough for everyone, but it looks like we’re finally squinting in the spring sunshine and normal freedoms returning to us. For many people, the pandemic has forced us to re-evaluate what is important and valuable in this precious life. For many people, the answer lies in nature and in appreciating this wonderful planet we live on.
In this special series you’ll find some simple ways to transform your garden into a space that suits you, whatever your lifestyle.
During the various lockdowns we have retreated to our gardens or local outdoor spaces and understood the power of nature. Some took up gardening for the first time and discovered the joys of growing and caring for plants.
During this period there was also a growing concern about climate change and pollution. We all have a role to play in this serious challenge facing the world.

My garden has been my salvation through our time of limitations. After decades of continuous running, everything stopped… and I had to stop too. I began digging, developing a slow, soothing rhythm. I removed stones, weeds and problems from my mind.
I moved in the garden and followed the sun. For the first time I lived with a garden and watched what was happening every day. I pinned my hopes on it, sowing seeds and planting trees.
And around our little island they did the same. Dig, plant, dream and use the ground as a grounding, soothing comfort.
Many discovered how good gardening is in this part of the world. We can create rooms full of plants from many places in the world. We enjoy four distinct seasons, each gently merging into the next. All have their own jewels and delights. There is always something to remember and look forward to.
Like all new relationships, we need to nurture our relationship with nature, with gardens, parks, and our natural landscape. We appreciate the extraordinary plant life a lot more and after seeing droughts and wildfires we might appreciate our gentle rain a little more… the element of our climate that allows Ireland to be green.
There’s a new generation of gardeners emerging from the pandemic – one who loves plants and wants to learn about the craft of gardening. What to sow when, how to choose a tree, how to take a cutting or master the dark art of pruning, and what variety of potatoes to plant in March.
And it’s time to celebrate, gather and socialize again. Read my tips on how to get your garden in tip-top shape for summer BBQs and parties. You will also find answers to the most common questions about problems such as how to cover the barrel, what to plant in shady places and what to do with bare concrete walls.
Finally, I share with you my predictions on what I believe to be the most important gardening trends of the future. They may not be projects you will undertake this year, but it might get you thinking and fantasizing about what could be.
