Diarmuid Ó Conghaile joins Wizz Air after leaving the IAA

Diarmuid Ó Conghaile, whose surprise departure as chief executive-designate of the Aviation Authority of Ireland was announced last week, has been appointed as the new CEO of Wizz Air Malta.

Wizz Air’s new subsidiary will be established later this year. Mr O. Conghaile is expected to leave the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) at the end of October.

Mr Ó Conghaile, asked by the Irish Independent last week about taking on a new role at Wizz Air, declined to comment.

Mr Ó Conghaile was General Manager of Strategy, Planning and Economic Regulation at the DAA, which operates Dublin and Cork airports, before joining Ryanair in 2016. At Ryanair he was Director of Public Affairs and later headed Malta Air subsidiary.

In early 2021 he was appointed Chief Executive Designate of the IAA.

Jozsef Varadi, Chief Executive Officer of London-listed Wizz Air, welcomed Mr Ó Conghaile’s appointment.

Will Air said its Maltese subsidiary “places us on the cusp of an exciting journey” and that the creation of the new entity “will help reinforce Wizz Air’s strong position and support its ambitious expansion plans in Europe”.
