Diphtheria outbreak: Suella Braverman under fire for moving refugees

Over 70 cases of suspected diphtheria have been observed in asylum seekers who have been transferred from the migrant processing center in Kent to hotels across the UK.

The number of cases of the highly contagious bacterial infection has risen sharply in the face of criticism of Braverman’s handling of the Channel refugee crisis.

Last month, Braverman came under fire for her comments on the issue, when she described the influx of migrants as an “invasion” of Britain’s south coast.

The Home Office has also been accused of changing the dates of birth of unaccompanied children in order to be able to arrest them as adults.

It has also been criticized for failing to take action at these facilities to address overcrowding, which many claimed led to the outbreak and spread of diphtheria.

Jim McManus, president of the Association of Directors of Public Health, warned that the UK government was putting “asylum seekers and potentially hotel workers at avoidable and avoidable risk”.

He added that an offer to help the government deal with the situation had been “declined” and that the lack of “information, coordination and commitment on the part of the Home Office made the situation much worse than it could have been”. .

Liberal Democrat health spokeswoman Daisy Cooper said the Home Secretary “must take responsibility and resign immediately” over the “scandal”.

“Britain is better than that. The Conservative Government should be ashamed of their callous complacency about the health and welfare of asylum seekers coming from Manston,” she added.

However, Cabinet Secretary Mark Harper assured that there was an “extremely low risk to the general public” from the outbreak of the infection.
