Disney+ is launching a cheap new plan to rival Netflix just in time for Christmas — but there are two catches

DISNEY+ released its own ad-supported subscription plan — and it’s very different from Netflix’s.
The movie powerhouse has only launched it in the US so far, with other countries like the UK set to follow next year.
It also coincides with an overall price change for US viewers.
The main premium subscription is now $10.99 per month instead of $7.99.
To continue paying the old price, you must opt for the ad-supported plan.
Corresponding TechCrunchcommercial breaks will be between 15 and 30 or 45 seconds long.

Total ad load is limited to an average of four minutes per hour.
And content for preschoolers will not contain any advertising at all.
Netflix’s US advertising plan costs a whole dollar less at $6.99.
But the offer is a bit different.
Disney owns all the content on Disney+ and is therefore able to make all titles available to everyone.
While ad-supported Netflix is lacking due to licensing issues, the company’s CEO recently said that blocked content only accounts for about 10 percent of viewing time.
Disney doesn’t hold back on video quality either, allowing everyone to access shows up to 4K regardless of what subscription plan they’re on.
Netflix has capped its ad subscribers to 720p.
Another key difference is that Disney+ still allows up to four devices to play simultaneously – while Netflix only allows one.
One thing Disney + Basic has in common with Netflix Basic with Ads is that you can’t download anything to watch offline.
GroupWatch, SharePlay, and Dolby Atmos are also disabled at launch.
Since Disney offers other services in the US, users can also get bundle deals.

Duo Basic includes Disney+ and Hulu, available for $9.99 per month.
And Trio Basic also adds ESPN+ to the mix for $12.99 per month.
