There’s no denying that now, Rod Dreher said The American Conservative. The Walt Disney Company is trying, as critics of the supposedly family-friendly entertainment company have long suspected, to indoctrinate young people with the “Wake” ideology.
Proof comes in the form of leaked footage from a Disney conference call in which executive producer Latoya Raveneau boasted about incorporating pro-LGBT material into a show she helms. Everyone she’s worked with, she says, has embraced her “not at all secret gay agenda” of adding “queerness” to shows, including her series The proud family. wake up parents “Disney is the enemy of your family and your children.”
Conservatives have jumped on this leaked tape, Michelle Goldberg said in The New York Timeswho see it as powerful ammunition in their burgeoning culture war with Disney. The company has been in their sights since the denunciation Florida Gov. Ron DeSantisThe controversial Parents’ Rights in Education Act – dubbed “don’t say gay” by its critics – restricts classroom discussions of sexual orientation and gender identity to older cohorts. Disney, one of Florida’s largest employers with about 80,000 employees, has suspended political donations in the state in response to the law.
Raveneau’s comments were clearly tongue-in-cheek; and the results of her “agenda,” as they are, seem “sweetly painless”: a character on her show has a gay boyfriend; another has gay fathers. It’s harmless stuff considering that most people these days are complacent about the presence of gay, lesbian and transgender people in public life. But the right has seized on the comments as evidence that Disney is out to sexualize children and corrupt their minds. On Fox News, host Laura Ingraham called it “propaganda for care.” Yes, the QAnon conspiracy theory that liberals are “a cabal of pedophiles has gone mainstream.”
Disney may not be out to corrupt children, Sheila McClear said in Los Angeles Magazine, but there’s no doubt that it’s getting more and more political, in a way that annoys a lot of people. Last summer, it removed all “gender salutes” from its parks: no more “boys and girls,” now it’s “hello, friends.” And in a company-wide Zoom call last month, Karey Burke, Disney’s head of general entertainment, said that “as a mother to one transgender child and one pansexual child,” she wanted to increase queer visibility in the Magic Kingdom.
No wonder a recent poll found that 65% of Americans believe corporate vigilance has gone too far, Harrison Rogers said RealClearPolitics.com. Parents don’t want a “pansexual Lion King” or “trans Cinderella.” They “only want quality content,” devoid of sexual and political messages.
That’s what happens when companies start to stake positions on legislation, Megan McArdle said in The Washington Post. Disney has been encouraged to speak out on the Florida bill by progressives who believe it has the whip hand over the state. You are wrong. Corporations exert influence when it comes to lobbying for things like tax breaks; but on “big issues that the public cares deeply about, a million votes counts far more than a million corporate dollars.”
Disney’s criticism of the Don’t Say Gay bill had no discernible effect on Florida Republicans other than providing them with a handy target. “After all, why should they care what Disney thinks?” It’s not like the company can throw up sticks and move Disney World to another state. The resort is roughly the size of San Francisco. The company will not find a buildable website of this size again. Disney would have done better to stay out of this fight.
