Disunited unionists and SF ‘loners’ really need help

blank

With the Northern Ireland Assembly elections now in full swing, let’s take a closer look at the main contenders.

The long-established division still persists – even if it is being marginally eroded by the Alliance and the Greens.

Let’s look at the unionists. Aside from being part of a long-defunct London-based empire, they don’t want to be in union with anyone — certainly not the Republic of Ireland and the European Union.

They don’t even want to have a union among themselves where we have DUP, PUP, TUV and UUP so far. Just like the Covid variants, they will surely run out of letters of the alphabet at some point.

On the other side where we have, it gets even better sense fine (“We alone”). Ironically, apart from the defunct Empire, they don’t want to be ‘alone’ at all and seek union with virtually everyone, the Irish Republic, the European Union and lately even the Unionists of the North.

Also, I suspect that by 2025 this ‘we alone and alone’ party will also want to link up with anyone south of the border – Labour, Social Democrats, People Before Profit, Fianna Fáil et al. I think it’s time these “union-shy” unionists and these ultra-sociable “loners” sat down with a couple of psychologists and sorted themselves out.

The world lacks someone of Merkel’s caliber to stop Putin

Your editorial team (Irish IndependentApril 20th) makes a lot of sense during this time.

It also shows the complete lack of senior statesmen/women in today’s world. Are the mistakes of the False War of 1938-39 repeating themselves? Or are NATO and the EU is afraid that Putin will start a nuclear war?

How can you deal with a man who has not only surrounded himself with yes men but the blessings of Russian the Orthodox Church, as he lies and distorts the facts about Ukraine.

He has now brought thousands of hired assassins out of Syria to turn the fight in his favor.

How did the political leadership of Russia get to this state? That’s because the KGB taught a unique straight line of Russian history, allowed no ifs or buts. Perhaps it is time to seriously consider reclaiming Angela Merkel as negotiator.

Fine Gael’s founder, O’Duffy, was a fascist, lest we forget

Reading Ian O’Doherty’s article on Europe moving towards fascism, he mentions that we can be relieved that in Ireland we tend to reject this form of political extremism. I’m sure Ian has heard of Eoin O’Duffy, one of the founding members of Fine Gael.

Anfield gesture shows the best side of the beautiful game

Given the intense rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester United fans, it was heartwarming to see the sympathy for Cristiano Ronaldo on Tuesday night following the death of his young son at Anfield. To see and hear the full crowd singing You’ll never Walk Alone was one of the greatest displays of respect I have ever seen.

Why rule-breaker Johnson is either a liar or incompetent

Boris Johnson claimed he was unaware he broke Covid rules at Downing Street. He’s either a liar or, as a head of government, incompetent in not knowing the rules.

A little closer to home, Haughey wasn’t ideal either

Your correspondent Michael Gannon has – with some justification – poked fun at Boris Johnson. However, in the interests of fair play, may I respectfully remind Mr. Gannon of the equally disreputable Charles Haughey? Few politicians are perfect. glass houses?

An interesting mix of views on US political leadership

The US leadership’s reporting certainly has some contradictions Irish Independent from 18.04.

While John Bolton suggests “better leadership in Washington would be a great plus,” Jennifer Rubin, unsurprisingly or not, refers to “testimony of skillful leadership from the United States.”

A debate on this would be interesting.
