Katie Makinson bought an old playhouse for just £15 on Facebook Marketplace and decided to give it a color makeover – now the new design is bursting with color and the mum-of-one couldn’t be happier
A DIY mum has explained how she gave her son the playhouse of his dreams after spending just £15 on Facebook Marketplace.
Katie Makinson, 32, bought an old second-hand playhouse and decided to paint it to give it new life.
Catterick Garrison’s mother-of-one and pastry chef transformed it with French paint and decorations from the Pound Shop.
She estimates the entire project cost her less than £100 – but says an extravagant new playhouse can cost as much as £300 or more.
Katie had previously prepared the guest bedroom and lounge units as a surprise for her husband before he returned from the assignment.
She was inspired to create something for her son after discovering the playhouse on Facebook.
She told money-saving Facebook group DIY On A Budget UK: “I saw the £15 playhouse on Facebook Marketplace and decided this would be my next project.
“It was very faded and weathered and since we are not allowed to decorate the house in condominiums I have to improvise and make accessories.

“I looked at some inspiration online and got my color out.
“I used various shades of Frenchic Alfresco paint and decorations from Yorkshire Trading, Amazon and the Pound Shop.
“While I was doing it, it felt endless and it really tested my patience.
“It was pretty funny for my husband and son to see me trying to squeeze in to paint the house!”
Katie already had the paint, which saved her some money for the DIY project.
She is thrilled with the overall design and says she loves the fact that her son has a truly unique playhouse that no one else has.
“He has the only one like him and every time I look at him I’m proud,” Katie said.
“I’m glad I saved money as the cost of living is soaring and I’m not well enough to work at the moment so money is tight.
“Now it’s done, I’m over the moon and it’s made me really proud of myself and I’m looking for my next project.
“I’ve saved over £100 because they cost £200 to £300 to buy new for a basic house whilst he has the only one of its kind.”
Tom Church, co-founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, said: “Playhouses can cost hundreds or even thousands of pounds to buy new, so kudos to Katie for saving this house from landfill and converting it herself for under £100.
“Not only did she save money, but she made sure that her son had an absolutely unique, one-of-a-kind playhouse that was built with love.”
